Description:

Classical World, Greco-Roman Period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A forged-iron ring shank bearing an inlaid carnelian intaglio of ovoid form. Incised atop the intaglio is a scene depicting a left-facing rooster, plump and standing upon delineated legs, with a krater amphora to its left that is filled with grains. Since antiquity, the rooster has been a sacred animal and is deeply embedded within various religious belief systems, perhaps because the rooster has associations with being a divine messenger. Size: 0.37" L x 0.81" W x 0.37" H (0.9 cm x 2.1 cm x 0.9 cm)
