Description:

Greco-Roman, Hellenistic to early Roman Imperial period, ca. 3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE. The front half of a dynamic horse protome finely cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process from leaded bronze, the foreparts emerging from a square socket on the verso with 4 openings to attach to an object or vessel. Protomes of all forms - human torsos to mythical creatures - served as decorative attachments on furniture, vessels, chariots, handles on utilitarian objects, and architecture in classical antiquity. Prancing horses were a popular type throughout the Roman empire, symbolizing strength, speed, and wealth and valued for their contributions to militaristic success and other roles throughout human history. Size: 1.75" L x 1" W x 1.8" H (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm x 4.6 cm); 2.25" H (5.7 cm) on included custom stand.
