Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A superb pottery pedestal dish resting on a flared foot, the interior basin featuring a split representation of a shark! Artists would create what some call "split representations" the image will represent more than one animal - here the head is a hammerhead shark with a serpentine or eel body! Gran Cocle refers to a cultural region in pre-Columbian Panama, known for its archaeological significance, particularly in the central part of the country. It encompasses several cultures and sites that were prominent between 500 CE and 1520 CE. The terracotta is slipped in a creamy beige and black, red, and purple pigments - the use of purple is indicative of the Conte or Macaracas pottery style. Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 257. Appraised for $3,400 by Marianne Huber in 2014.

  • Condition: Loss to pedestal foot as shown and stable hairline fissure to this area. Hair line fissure on the center of basin that extends through to both front and verso. New material added to the rim and overpainted where this fissure begins to stabilize this area. Professionally repaired and the infill is nearly indiscernible.
