Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery jar exhibiting a highly stylized anthropomorphic portrait on the front of the apple-shaped body. The cream-hued surfaces are adorned with black, red, and purple pigment characteristic of later pottery types within the Cocle culture, and the tall, tapered neck is decorated with abstract curvilinear bands. Size: 5.4" L x 5.625" W x 6.75" H (13.7 cm x 14.3 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 260. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.
