Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumeria, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. One of my favorites, a necklace composed of pale blue faience and darker blue paste glass beads with a round amulet studded with a spherical garnet. The amulet is disc-shaped and slightly raised, with four concentric circles, often thought to be wards against the evil eye, molded into its face. A deep red garnet is at the center of the amulet. The strand is composed of dozens of cylindrical, round, and four-pointed star-shaped faience and paste glass beads. Beads of this style have been found in tombs throughout ancient Mesopotamia, including at the royal palace of Ur. Pretty and wearable. Size of amulet: 1.3" W (3.3 cm); length of string: 19" L (48.3 cm)

Provenance: ex private A. Shenas collection, Queens, New York, United States
