Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous bronze patera, the body presenting a broad rounded form comprised of conjoined upper and lower section joined via a band of rivets, a flat rim, and a long handle attached via four rivets that is also flat with raised borders and a duck head terminal. Note the duck's attractive curved neck, pointed beak, and incised eyes. Pateras were offering dishes that were used to pour libations and to make sacrifices using wine and other liquids. Some were also used for serving food at symposia. A wonderful example with a hand wrought surface that has developed a rich green patina. Size: 19" L (duck terminal to opposite end) x 9.75" diameter (vessel body) (48.3 cm x 24.8 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection, private Dere family collection acquired pre-1980
