Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century BCE. This is a bronze applique in the form of an actor's mask that stands out because of its truly amazing condition - aside from a smooth black-green patina, it looks as good as the day it was made. Roman theatre, like Greek theatre before it, thrived on the use of expressive masks; this applique may be a reproduction of a larger version worn by actors. It shows a figure with a smooth, youthful face, and elaborately styled hair capped by a distinctive hat. Size: 2.3" W x 3.25" H (5.8 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
