Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 15 BCE to 30 CE. A beautifully made redware pottery cup, in the Arretine (Red Gloss) style, first produced in Arretium (Arezzo), Italy. These objects were made to have a highly reflective surface, meant to recall glass or silver. This particular example has a pronounced foot and thick bands marking out the rim. The technique used to finish the slip on items like this one led to its name, terra sigilata, literally "sealed earth". Size: 4.25" W x 2" H (10.8 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
