Description:

Ancient Near East, modern day Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 700 BCE. A beautiful example of a Luristan form, this is a bronze hollow tubular standard in the style of a "master of animals", a subhuman figure standing above the heads and necks of equally stylized, deer-like animals. The figure's arms encircle the animals in what some have seen as an image of control. The true function of objects like this is unknown. Suggestions for their interpretation have ranged from the religious - depictions of deities, idols, talismans, etc. - to the utilitarian - parts of chariots or used in funerary rituals. This particular example has a gorgeous blue azurite patina. Comes with brand new custom stand! Size: 3.2" W x 3.9" H (8.1 cm x 9.9 cm)
