Description:

Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. 4th century BCE. A striking wheel-thrown pottery lekanis with a rounded foot and a concave center, a hemispherical basin with a lightly-inset rim, a pair of circular loop handles flanked with tab-shaped fins, and a discoid lid with a flat knob handle. Both the body and lid are enveloped with a lustrous black glaze - save for underneath the foot and around the lid handle - which imbues the vessel with an elegant, regal presentation, and scattered areas have developed faint silvery iridescence. Lidded lekanides were cosmetic containers, often given by fathers to brides on their wedding day. Size (w/ lid): 8.5" W x 4.3" H (21.6 cm x 10.9 cm).

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Dutch collection, acquired at an art market in Amsterdam
