Byzantium, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A stunning pair of high karat (18 kt) gold earrings, each crescentic in form with an openwork design of a pair of confronting peacocks flanking a circumscribed Byzantine cross, the details chased and punched, and framed within gold wire. The earrings are further adorned with five hollow gold spheres set equidistantly on the lower border, the ear hook joined to the concave edge, arching above, and intended to hook to a loop at one end. A beautiful example of ancient wearable art. Size: 1.375" W x 1.75" H (3.5 cm x 4.4 cm); Weight: 10.3 grams
