Oceania, Melanesia, Solomon Islands, Malaita, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An absolutely gorgeous piece of handmade art, this is a wooden comb with long thin teeth and incredible bright red, yellow, and black fibers weaving around the lower ends of the teeth to form a decorative handle. This is one of the finest examples of these decorative combs that we have seen! Combs were an important part of personal ornamentation for people in the Solomon Islands, worn alongside woven skirts and belts, jewelry, and flowers.
