Description:

Magna Graecia, ca. 4th century BCE. Ornate bulbous ribbed body, ring base with pinched lip and strap handle, a molded relief lion head at base of neck. Gnathia was a sub style of the Apulia region in South Italy who produced these black glazed vessels with bands of decorative stylized grape bands and egg patterns. Good remains of added red, yellow, and white. Decorated with ovolo pattern around neck; pendant leaf design around body and a central wreath with bird (now faded). Pigment on neck. 9-1/4"H.
