Description:

Western Europe, Germany, Eichstatt, Solnhofen (Altmuhltal) Formation, Jurassic Period, ca. 154 to 144 million years ago. This remarkable fossil, belonging to the Antrimpos genus, is encased within a substantial slab of limestone matrix, showcasing impeccable preservation with no artificial enhancements, other than minor touch up to the antennae. What sets this specimen apart is its remarkable size - a staggering 7 inches (17.78 cm) in length. This colossal crustacean is not "shrimpy" when compared to other examples. Its elongated, segmented body, adorned with a flexible carapace covering the thorax and head, is flawlessly captured. Additionally, distinctive features such as multiple pairs of limbs and a fan-like tail are evident. The delicate nature and loose articulation of a decapod's carapace make the intact preservation of the entire creature a rarity. Typically, representations in fossil layers consist of partial or poorly preserved specimens, further highlighting the significance of this pristine find. Size: 10" L x 7.75" W (25.4 cm x 19.7 cm)

Fine-quality Solnhofen fossils have become exceedingly rare, often sourced from old private collections like this specimen. This particular species of shrimp, originating from the Jurassic period, typically measures around 2 inches in length. While lengths of four inches are uncommon, this specimen stands out at an impressive seven inches. It's noteworthy that this measurement pertains solely to the body, excluding the antennae. The carapace displays excellent mineralization. The fossil exhibits 100% genuine impressions for the entire head, body, and legs, with artificially drawn antennae to enhance its display. Moreover, it rests upon an unbroken slab of its original limestone matrix.
