Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the island of Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. An incredibly rare surviving hollow ceramic figure of a frog, its body crouched with its back legs curled up around its body, its front legs pressed forward as if ready to spring. The head is tilted upwards, its features dramatically depicted so that it has huge, round eyes, each painted black, and thick lips, also painted black. The remains of white pigment are still present, especially around the flared nostrils and deep red pigment is present in isolated places on the back. An enigmatic figure - a collar around his neck suggests that he is tamed, yet his lusty expression hints that this may have been a fertility symbol. Size: 9.75" W x 9.95" H (24.8 cm x 25.3 cm)
