Lot 112B
Morocco, Agadir, mid-Cretaceous, 112 to 99.6 million years ago. This massive naturally-colored ammonite is a member of the Procheloniceras species Cretaceous ammonites from the coastal village of Agadir, Morocco. It is a robust type and seldom is most often found in sizes ranging from a tea cup saucer to a salad plate. Only very rarely are genuine specimens found in this size class. The display side of this Procheloniceras required regrinding to the chamber detail upon completion of matrix removal but the anatomy and detail is accurate and correct for the species. Overall, this is a spectacular display of prehistoric ocean life when T. rex and other famous dinosaurs were walking the earth. This monstrous and stunning specimen is even MUCH nicer in person than the photos indicate. Beware of completely carved fakes that offer no trace of original chamber detail on the reverse side as this is a problem in the market today. Ammonites that occur this size naturally are RARE! Size: 4" L x 17" W x 19.5" H (10.2 cm x 43.2 cm x 49.5 cm)
With its three-dimensional form and texture, this ammonite specimen will bring any event to a halt when displayed. It is in a class all its own, not only desired by collectors, but treasured by interior designers and architects alike for incorporating into a stunning display. Wonderfully detailed. An exquisite specimen for such a rare size and an absolute "show-stopper"! We highly recommend this magnificent giant fossil to either augment a collection or serve as a monumental interior design piece. The pictures with the hand indicate the real magnitude of this enormous specimen. Ammonites are invertebrates and extinct members of the subclass Ammonoidea, class Cephalopoda. They became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period 65 million years ago, the same time the dinosaurs succumbed to extinction. Modern relatives of ammonites include the nautilus, squid, cuttlefish and octopus. Ammonites first appeared during the Middle Devonian Period around 400 million years ago. They became especially abundant and widespread in the seas of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, 175 million to 65 million years ago. Ammonites were so plentiful throughout various stages of geologic history that scientists use them as INDEX FOSSILS whereby the presence of certain types in a rock layer can denote a specific time period.
