Description:

George Northrup (American, 1940-2017). "Hatch" bronze, glass and black marble, 1986. Edition 4 of 28. Signature, date, and edition number inscribed on the bronze sea floor. A striking bronze marine wildlife sculpture by the late George Northrup of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This composition features a lively group of fish swimming in a swirling motion. The fish rise from a pile of pebbles on the sea floor and one fish's tail emerges from the water's bubbling surface which Northrup created from green glass and is a work of art itself. Northrup masterfully played with movement and light in his sculpture, and when he created this sculpture, George actually went under water to observe how fish interacted in their aquatic environment. In his words, "While painting is the story of play between color and light, sculpture is the story of play between movement and form. Each the story of art and the stretch to express the otherwise inexpressible." Size: 20" L x 24" W x 24" H (50.8 cm x 61 cm x 61 cm)

  • Condition: Bronze is excellent. Glass has a couple of small chips to the glass in the vicinity of the opening for the fish tail. Otherwise normal bubbles in the glass from the artist's process. A few scuffs to the black marble base. Otherwise, it is intact and quite nice. One screw joining the bronze to the base is missing, but this does not impact the appearance of the piece.
