Description:

Gay Patterson (American, 1948-2019). "Cho (Butterfly)" watercolor, ca. 1970s. Signed on lower right. A stunning, large-scale watercolor depicting an attractive Japanese female geisha by Santa Fe artist Gay Patterson. The young lady wears a beautiful kimono adorned with pink blossoms and butterflies against a black ground. She raises her arms in a graceful dancelike pose and turns her head back so that it faces the opposite direction of her outstretched hands, her pretty visage presenting delicate features framed by centrally-parted, straight black tresses. Pink blossoms extend to the glowing background. A gorgeous and impressively large watercolor set in a custom matte and frame behind glass. Size (painting): 20.125" L x 14.5" W (51.1 cm x 36.8 cm) Size (frame): 29.7" L x 23.875" W (75.4 cm x 60.6 cm)

Gay Patterson's artist's statement provides precious insight to her work. The following is a poignant excerpt: "Over decades, I seem to have embedded notions of ephemerality, motion and the constant of change in my work. I'm not sure if I'm trying to understand mutability, nail it down or accept it, but it is a primal state of life, and so very beautiful. What you see, feel and think depends on just how you approach everything, including art. In looking at a painting, no part exists in isolation but alters in relationship to what it is next to, where it is viewed from, what the quality of light is and every experience you bring along."
