Garry Wayne Thurber (Canadian, 1940s-2014) "Delia - Wife of Aarron the Healer from Dreams of Atlantis," soapstone sculpture, ca. 1992. An incredible Atlantis themed fairy-tale carved into a large soapstone: a mermaid goddess, fish, otter, twisting seaweed - the imagery spanning all sides of this pyramidal sculpture and flowing together as a cohesive whole! The base is signed by the artist with the year and initialed "S.S.I." for Salt Spring Island, B.C. This carving is inspired by a bedtime story Thurber made up for his children, and eventually wrote down with plans to publish as a book accompanied by 19 sculptures. It took 5 years to fulfill his artistic vision by sculpting the various elements in clay before arranging and condensing together, carving a small stone version, and then the final masterpiece. This is the 18th sculpture completed according to a typed draft of the story that was part of a 1991 exhibition along with a handwritten letter by Thurber. Size: 13" L x 11" W x 18.5" H (33 cm x 27.9 cm x 47 cm)

The imagery is of a semi-divine being named Delia (the mermaid) who has magical healing powers and the ability to shapeshift into various creatures. Delia is tasked with finding the surviving creatures after a massive storm of diluvial proportions, and she finds an otter pup named Siri.
