Description:

Northwest Pakistan, Gandhara, ca. 4th to 5th Century CE. A finely modeled Gandharan stucco seated Buddha with traces of red and white pigments remaining on the surface. The Buddha sits cross-legged with his left arm resting on his left leg. Though a section with losses to the hands, this Buddha most likely displayed the meditation mudra at one time. The Buddha has a somewhat elongated oval face with relatively sharp eyebrows extending onto his narrow, pointed nose, almond-shaped eyes, pursed lips, a small rounded chin and elongated 'pierced' earlobes, stretched from once wearing luxurious earrings, hence symbolic of his former indulgences as a prince. His pulled-back coiffure with waves indicated by diagonal incised markings has a raised edge and a slight "widow's peak," as well as a pronounced, rounded ushnisha representing a crown that symbolizes the Buddha's spiritual power and enlightenment. He wears a long-sleeved robe with a U-shaped neckline and concentric folds cascading over his torso and limbs, stretched tautly so as to hug the body beneath as is customary of Gandharan sculptors who were influenced by the Classical world's embrace of anatomy. A wonderful example on a custom stand. Size: 5.875" W x 7.875" H (14.9 cm x 20 cm), 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on stand.
