Description:

Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 200 BCE to 400 CE. A stucco cast of the upper body of a young woman with fine details. Her clothing is richly detailed and done in the Greek style, with drapes and folds carefully portrayed. Her hands are crossed over her lap, each finger delineated. Her face is serene and naturalistic, her eyes downcast, and her hair is portrayed as long and gently curled, tied back at the nape of her neck. Her earlobes hang low, each pierced as if wearing large earrings has enlarged them. Perhaps the figure represents a bodhisattva. Size: 4.25" W x 6.3" H (10.8 cm x 16 cm)

Gandhara, situated along the Silk Road, collected artistic influences from the East (India) and the West (the ancient Near East and Classical world). Gandharan artisans were supported by Gandharan elites, who made their fortunes on trade and the transit of goods. The body of this figure is very Greek looking, but the face itself has a particular Gandharan style.
