Description:

Northwest Pakistan, Gandhara, Kushan Period, ca.  3rd century CE.  Stone Ghandara stele most likely erected for funerary or commemorative purposes with  head and torso of Buddha or Bodhisattva figure donning ample robe with carefully delineated folds, holding the garment in both hands, and an inscription at the base.  Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE and with the help of the Indo-Greek kings introduced classical traditions that would influence Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. The attention to the drapery of the himation, the stylized curly Mediterranean hair and top knot that derive from the Apollo Belvedere (330 BCE), as well as sensitive modeling of the expressive visage exhibits this classical influence. The pinkish hues of the stone indicate that the piece may have been stucco'd or that the limestone has absorbed pigments from iron from burial. A rare example of Greco-Buddhist art that demonstrates a strong syncretism between eastern and western traditions. Measures 26" tall x 18" wide x 7" deep. Provenance: Ex-Artemis Gallery, acquired at east coast auction.
