Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 200 BCE to 100 CE. A nicely preserved schist panel depicting two figures in relief - one, the seated Buddha, the other a richly dressed attendant who kneels beside Buddha, looking to the other side. Above this second figure is a platform composed of tightly pressed together serpent heads. Above this are the remains of three carved feet, hinting at further figures when the panel was complete. Buddha wears a draped robe and sits with his hands in his lap. Flames are at his shoulders and a large aureole/halo is behind his head and shoulders. Size: 8.5" W x 7.75" H (21.6 cm x 19.7 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.
