Description:

Pakistan/Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fascinating period of ancient art! While the Greeks "conquered" this part of the ancient world under Alexander the Great four centuries earlier - and soon thereafter abandoned the region - their influence continued for centuries, with pockets today of fair-skinned "Greeks" existing in parts of this region. Grey schist sculpture of a large fortress with deep door, battlements along top with corner towers for archers to position themselves. Next to the fortress is a large Roman style "marble" capital, with Buddha and two attendants in next panel, small insertion tang on three sides. Size: 9-5/8" W. Provenance: Ex-private NYC collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108528
