Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fabulous relief schist of rectangular form from the base of a stupa. One side of the stone is carved in high relief to show a repeated motif of a seated Buddha with 2 attendants. In both images, Buddha sits on a tall, tiered throne, and his attendants fan him with large fronds. On the left, he sits with his hands in the Abhaya mudra, one palm raised and facing outward; this is the gesture of fearlessness and protection, representing spiritual power. On the right, he sits with his hands in the Dhyana mudra. This is a gesture of meditation, with the hands placed in the lap, right hand on left, with fingers full stretched out and palms facing upwards. In between these two figures is a tall, Classical-style column. Size: 9.7" W x 4" H (24.6 cm x 10.2 cm)

The Gandharan Empire made itself wealthy in part by controlling lucrative trade along the mountain passes between China in the East and the Near East and Mediterranean in the West; a great deal of this wealth went into local patronage of artisans and art. In the first century CE, Buddhism became fashionable amongst Gandharan elites, and the art produced at this time included some of the most striking Buddhist images from the past. Their artistic tradition also reflects the conquest of Alexander the Great and the introduction of Western aesthetics, blended into a uniquely Gandharan tradition.
