Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. A stunning grey schist head, painstakingly carved, with a prominent top knot. The face is sensuously and realistically carved, with large, almond-shaped, downcast eyes, a long, thin nose, a symmetrical brow ridge, and a small mouth with a thin mustache atop it. The hair of the mustache is slightly wavy, as is the hair that peeks out from underneath the headdress. This is the young Prince Siddhartha (Siddharta), dressed in the contemporary Gandharan finery of a rajah. Size: 4.5" W x 7.25" H (11.4 cm x 18.4 cm); 9.15" H (23.2 cm) on included custom stand.
