Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. A fine example of a Gandharan schist relief panel; it shows a seated female bodhisattva with a richly carved throne whose details are nicely delineated, giving an impression of a piece of wooden furniture with sumptuous cloth coverings. She holds two items - a jar and what looks like a piece of fruit - and wears a large diadem and draped robe. A halo is visible behind her head. Size: 6" W x 8.25" H (15.2 cm x 21 cm); 9.2" H (23.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Benjamin Rice, Jr. collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s
