Central Asia, region of Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A beautiful panel fragment of a rectangular form carved from grey schist. The panel features a regal bust of a prince with a masculine upper body and one raised hand clenching an ambiguous item. His head peers to his left with incised almond-shaped eyes, and puffy lips, full cheeks, a smooth brow, and a carefully arranged coiffure with a bun-shaped topknot complete his detailed countenance. Once part of a larger panel, this figure may have been presented with several other figures in a courtly or religious scene. Size: 3.625" W x 5.25" H (9.2 cm x 13.3 cm).

Provenance: The Dere Family Collection, New York, USA, assembled 1970's-2000's; ex-Khan Family Collection, New Jersey, USA, acquired in 1980's
