Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A dignified gray schist sculpture depicting the head of an elderly male in the traditional Graeco-Buddhist style. The head exhibits a serene expression with piercing almond eyes beneath heavy lids and has gaunt cheek bones, a slender nose above a thin mustache, tall ears with elongated lobes, and a bushy beard with curling tips along the bottom. Three shallow wrinkles cross in front of the tall forehead, and the bald top exhibits rather smooth surfaces. The head's somewhat emaciated depiction suggests he is an ascetic, an individual who foregoes any form of indulgence or physical pleasure to maintain and demonstrate their religious devotion. Much Gandharan sculpture from this time period depicts the Buddha, but this example has no hallmarks suggesting that it is him or a representation of an elderly Prince Siddhartha. Size: 4.625" W x 6.7" H (11.7 cm x 17 cm)
