Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. An interesting cosmetic plate carved from dark gray-green schist that features a pair of anthropomorphic busts in the central window, perhaps of a husband and wife. The plate features a slightly rounded but stable base, a thick rim incised with dense crosshatch patterns, and four rectangular cosmetic compartments surrounding the figural display. The diagonal compartments each bear a decorative, multi-lobed flower that imbues the plate with a whimsical, elegant presentation. Size: 5.8" Diameter (14.7 cm)
