Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandhara, ca. 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. A hand-carved schist palette used for preparing or storing cosmetic material in one of its 4 rectangular receptacles. Within each receptacle are lengthy flower petals with additional flower blooms along the corners, and in the middle is a man and woman locked in a close embrace while placing their faces close to one another. Carved onto the verso is a sizable flower with a circular body surrounded by 8 large petals. Size: 5.125" W x 6.1" H (13 cm x 15.5 cm)
