Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 200 BCE to 100 CE. A tranquil carved schist bust of Siddhartha with tight lips, pointed nose, and half-closed almond shaped eyes that gaze downward in reflection. A small drilled recess on the forehead represents his third eye, and perhaps contained a colored stone. Ears stretched with jewelry and ornamental head bands showcase his princely attributes before the enlightenment, rebirthing him as Buddha. The hair and mustache are finely carved, the topknot bow coiffure and sensitive rendering of the facial features exhibit classical Indo-Greek traditions that were introduced into Gandharan culture when Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE. This bust is a beautiful blending of artistry and religious practice. Size: 7.25" W x 9.25" H (18.4 cm x 23.5 cm); 15.125" H (38.4 cm) on included custom stand.
