Lot 60A
Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A fine example of the influence of Greek subjects on Gandharan artisans, this is a grey schist carving in fine detail of a winged figure who stands nude aside from a necklace. The body of the figure is very Greek looking, although the carved wings have a flowing style that fans of Gandharan art will recognize from the naturalistic robes carved in Buddha statues. This figure closely resembles one held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art that functioned as a small volute affixed to the drums of stupas to support flower garlands, so it may have had the same use. Comes with custom stand. Size: 2.1" L x 1.3" W x 4.5" H (5.3 cm x 3.3 cm x 11.4 cm)
