Near East, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. This is a unique, naturalistic carving of a human face with elaborate braided hair and headdress. The face is detailed and includes expressive eyes, an impressive set of eyebrows, and a dapper mustache over a full-lipped mouth. Gandharan sculpture is a blend of Greco-Roman realism and flowing design and Buddhist symbolism. Size: 2.4" W x 4.2" H (6.1 cm x 10.7 cm)
