Lot 80A
India/ Pakistan, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Large and quite lovely gray schist stone carving of the seated Atlas. While this region of Asia was conquered by Alexander the Great 5 centuries earlier, this region continued to combine elements of Buddhist Asia with those of ancient Greece in its art and artifacts for centuries to come. Atlas is shown seated upon a large platform, right knee bent and held by his right hand, left leg curled in front of him resting upon a cloth garment, left hand upon his thigh. He shows great musculature and would need it to hold the world aloft for the rest of eternity. A lovely example! Size: 10.5" W x 13" H (26.7 cm x 33 cm)
