Description:

Northwest Pakistan, Gandharan, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fine, hand carved Gandharan gray schist statue of a Buddha standing upon a lotus pedestal. The Buddha wears an ample robe with carefully delineated folds and holds the garment in both hands, allowing the drapery folds to fall so gracefully. Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE and with the help of the Indo-Greek kings introduced classical traditions that would influence Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. The attention to the drapery of the himation, the stylized curly Mediterranean hair and top knot that derive from the Apollo Belvedere (330 BCE), as well as sensitive modeling of the expressive visage exhibits this classical influence. This example is a large fragment from an original larger stone relief that originally had the image of Buddha in Abaya Mudra, a gesture made with the right hand raised to shoulder height, a bent arm, and outward facing palm, symbolizing protection, tranquility, and the dispelling of fear. Despite the missing hand, it is an exquisite and rare example of Greco-Buddhist art that demonstrates a strong syncretism between eastern and western traditions. Attached to a museum quality, wood base that is connected to a back metal brace for support. Size: 16"H x 5"W x 2-1/2"D (40.6 x 12.7 x 6.4 cm)
