Description:

Northwest Pakistan, Gandharan, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fine, hand carved Gandharan gray schist statue of a bearded male figure wearing an ample robe with carefully delineated folds, the drapery falling gracefully over his body. The attention to the drapery of the himation, the stylized curly Mediterranean hair, as well as sensitive modeling of the expressive visage exhibits this classical influence. Set in a glass-fronted wooden display case. Size: 3.375" W x 6.375" H (8.6 cm x 16.2 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE and with the help of the Indo-Greek kings introduced classical traditions that would influence Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. This piece clearly shows the longstanding influence of the Hellenistic Period, which was brought by Alexander the Great and the Greeks in their conquest of India in the 4th Century BCE.
