Northwest Pakistan, Gandhara, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A Buddhist triad, finely carved from grey schist, featuring Buddha squatting upon a pedestal/throne, flanked by bodhisattvas, likely Avalokiteshvara and Prajnaparamita, with four diminuitive adoring attendants, all sheltered under the leafy canopy of perhaps the sacred Bodhi tree. All the figures show characteristic Gandharan Greco-Buddhist stylings; Buddha and bodhisattvas in particular are draped in light toga-like himations with carefully delineated folds. A rare example of Greco-Buddhist art that demonstrates a strong syncretism between eastern and western traditions. Custom, museum-quality stand. Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE and with the help of the Indo-Greek kings introduced classical traditions that would influence Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. The attention to the drapery of the himation, as well as sensitive modeling of expressive visages exhibit this classical influence.
