Description:

Northwest Pakistan, Gandhara, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A seated Buddha in meditative pose and mudra, carved from grey schist, bare chested but donning a toga with carefully delineated folds, that cascade over his shoulder and lower body and adorned with jewelry and a fanciful coiffure. Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE and with the help of the Indo-Greek kings introduced classical traditions that would influence Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. The attention to the drapery of the himation, the stylized curly Mediterranean hair and top knot that derive from the Apollo Belvedere (330 BCE), as well as sensitive modeling of the expressive visage exhibits this classical influence. A rare example of Greco-Buddhist art that demonstrates a strong syncretism between eastern and western traditions. Block stand. Size: sculpture itself 16-3/8" (41.6 cm) x 9-1/2" (24.1 cm); on stand 18-1/2" (47 cm) x 11-1/8" (28.3 cm)

As an example of a Meditation Buddha, also known as a Serenity Buddha or a Calming Buddha, this Buddha is depicted with both hands in the lap, face up, and the legs are crossed, either in a double lotus pose (with the ankles of each leg tucked behind one another in a locked position), or in a single lotus pose (where one leg rests on top of the other leg). Occasionally, an alms bowl is placed in the lap as well. As this statue generally represents focused concentration, the eyes of the Buddha are either depicted as halfway closed, or closed nearly all the way. The silhouette of the statue is shaped - more or less - like a triangle, which represents stability.
