India / Paklistan, ca. 1st / 2nd Century CE. Showing a couple with their arms resting on their shoulders, the woman on the right is wearing a pleated skirt and is holding a cloth which is slung around the calf of the naked man standing by her side. Indented narrow edge and plain underside. These so-called cosmetic palettes are disconnected from Buddhist narrative and often depicted Greek mythological figures. Stone palettes practically disappeared after the 1st century CE. Diameter 7.3 cm (2.9").
