Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan, India, or Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. A striking, sparkling grey schist panel depicting in high relief an almost nude male figure leaning sensuously against a wall, legs crossed and one hand on his hip. He wears a himation across his shoulders whose drapes and folds have been carefully depicted by the artist. He is muscular and youthful, and wears a necklace and anklets. Unfortunately time has worn away the details of his face and much of his hair. He stands on a pedestal that looks like an upturned lotus flower, and that is perched on a narrow leg on a set of several squared-off steps. The form of this pedestal mirrors the shape of an amphora. The wall he leans against separates him from a tall tree, giving the viewer the impression that the figure is inside while the tree is outside. The tree's form mirrors the man's pose, with a curved trunk and three tall fronds that rise above it. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.5" L x 6.75" W x 12" H (3.8 cm x 17.1 cm x 30.5 cm); height on stand: 13.4" (34 cm)

Gandhara, situated along the Silk Road, collected artistic influences from the East (India) and the West (the ancient Near East and Classical world). Gandharan artisans were supported by Gandharan elites, who made their fortunes on trade and the transit of goods. This figure exemplifies the Classical Western style of depicting clothing and foliage with a sensual pose style that is more familiar from Indian art.
