Roman, Gallo-Roman, France, Lyon (Lugdunum), Imperial Period, ca. 3rd century CE. A leaded-bronze applique with a protruding boss in the shape of a facing lion's head mounted on a round shield, made in two pieces and pierced at the top of the shield for attachment. This rondel was probably a decorative applique for a chest of piece of provincial furniture. Although whimsical the lion was a popular militaristic style conveying strength and courage.
