Description:

Gabriel Moreno (Spanish, b. 1973). Untitled printer's proof, n.d. Artist's signature and "P.P." (printer's proof) handwritten in pencil below the image. Fascinating, evocative and perhaps a bit macabre, this piece by Gabriel Moreno depicts two lovers, perhaps Adam and Eve, intertwined in an embrace against a cross with two serpents at their feet, one resting its head upon the other. All is delineated in brilliant color palette of saturated hues. Each figure wears skeletal mask with the female's brown eyes and male's blue eyes piercing through the skulls. Where the faces meet a large single set of lips is shown facing forward. Her skull sports feathers emerging from behind in an image that evokes Aztec dancers; his a Greek helmet. From each figure's outstretched palms are objects rising above; a rose from her and storm cloud from him, roots are below her hand, lightning below his, each piercing their flesh and creating drops of blood. Truly mesmerizing! Size (image): 27.25" L x 19.25" W (69.2 cm x 48.9 cm) Size (sheet): 30" L x 22.25" W (76.2 cm x 56.5 cm)

About the artist: "Gabriel Moreno graduated from the prestigious Facultad de Bellas Artes in Seville in 1998. He was selected as one of the most influential illustrators in the world by renowned Taschen editorial. His work has been featured in leading international publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Squire London, GQ USA, and Rolling Stone. His experience and reach is remarkable as an illustrator in advertising commissioned by iconic brands such as Nike, Rolex, Universal Music, and Coca-Cola. His pieces make striking statements about female beauty through graphic and elegant images.

In Moreno's practice, images and ideas need contrast, and by drawing in black and white he confines his visual language to shadow and light. Conceptual contrasts are furthered by subject matter and aesthetic contradictions, expressed in two levels of reading: pencil lines that show beauty and hide fragility, fear, ephemeron, sensuality, and tattoo lines, coursing through the skin of the figure and revealing what its beauty hides. The obvious eroticism of Moreno’s work is contained by a modesty and delicacy of temperament which infuses the technical and aesthetic elements of his art. He uses multiple artistic mediums and tools such as pencil, ink, marker, water-colour, digital art and sculpture. His art is held in private collections around the world."
