Western Europe, France, Acheulean period, ca. 450,000 to 150,000 years old. A large, red-brown chert hand axe from the Acheulean stone tool tradition- an amazing artifact from prehistoric Homo heidelbergensis, a close ancestor of modern humans! The stone is flaked and chipped to create a pointed tip and cutting edge- the area that is relatively smooth is the gripping area. Acheulean axes are the first human-made tools displaying intelligent design known to history which is demonstrated by this blade- when held with the cutting edge parallel to the user's wrist, the 4 fingers have a good purchase on one side, and the thumb on the other. This axe made to be used in a variety of tasks - butchering and skinning game, digging in soil, cutting trees and other plant matter. Size: 6.5" L x 3.75" W (16.5 cm x 9.5 cm)
