Description:

Frederick George Richard Roth (American, 1872-1944). Bronze Bear with White Star Sea Coral Fossil on Onyx Base. Undated. A miniature bronze polar bear by American animal sculptor Frederick G.R. Roth accompanied by a natural White Star Sea Coral Fossil, all upon a stunning onyx stone base boasting sage green, creamy white, and warm sienna hues as well as elegant areas of translucency. A mesmerizing sculptural work in which Roth rendered the seated polar bear's muscular body with impressive realism. His naturalistic depiction of the bear is perfectly complemented by the natural coral fossil and onyx base. Size (polar bear): 2.75" L x 1.5" W x 1.75" H (7 cm x 3.8 cm x 4.4 cm) Size (coral): 3.25" L x 3.5" W x 1.5" H (8.3 cm x 8.9 cm x 3.8 cm) Size (stone base): 6.5" diameter x .75" H (16.5 cm x 1.9 cm)

Please note: A bronze polar bear by Frederick George Richard Roth is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The MET provides the following description on their website, "An accomplished animal sculptor, Roth often modeled his subjects in local zoos. “Polar Bear” is probably his first study of this impressive animal, in which he emphasized its characteristic silhouette and easy, lumbering gait. Roth's careful depiction of the bear’s muscles, bones, and fur reflects his training in both veterinary medicine and art. This statuette is one of six in the Metropolitan’s collection that was purchased from Roth in 1906, at a time when the museum was making a special effort to collect smaller bronzes by American sculptors."
