Francisco Dosamantes (Mexican, 1911-1986). "Mayan Landscape" lithograph, 1947. Edition 250. Hand signed on the lower right, a beautiful lithograph by Mexican artist Francisco Dosamantes presenting a picturesque landscape with thatch-roofed houses nestled amidst leafy trees and maguey cacti. A woman at the doorway to the home closest to the viewer greets a young man who is dismounting his burro. This work stems from Dosamantes' involvement with "indigenismo" movement among early Modern Mexican artists. He took part in cultural missions of the Secretariat of Public Education in Oaxaca, Michoacan, and other rural states and developed an immense sympathy for their indigenous communities, thereafter devoting himself to political and cultural activism. Dosamantes created a series of lithographs depicting the lives of rural Maya in Campeche which have earned well-deserved recognition and have been acquired by numerous public and private collections. Size of sheet: 12.75" L x 17" W (32.4 cm x 43.2 cm) Size of mat: 13.875" L x 18.5" W (35.2 cm x 47 cm)
