Description:

Central Asia, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, Turkmen (Turkoman) culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. An intricate ceremonial tunic made from a patchwork of cotton cloth and embroidery, with attached brass appliques, pendants, beads, cowrie shells, and coins. Children would wear these open sided garments over their clothing, the talismans providing protection from misfortune and the evil eye. A prayer cap known as a kufi, made from cloth and entirely covered in embroidery is included. Variations of this type of hat are used in Islamic cultures throughout Asia and have various names, such as taqiyah, tahya, and topi. Both garments are mounted in a modern wood and glass display case. Size of tunic: 16" L x 16" W (40.6 cm x 40.6 cm); frame: 28" L x 23" W (71.1 cm x 58.4 cm)
