Description:

Moses Soyer (American, 1899-1974). Drawing (pastel and charcoal) on paper, mid 20th century. Hand signed in red on lower right. Hand signed in black above foot. A sizable, signed pastel drawing of a female nude by Moses Soyer, set in an attractive, custom frame. The woman sits with her arms and legs in a relaxed, crossed pose with a blue robe or blanket covering her lower body, as she gazes beyond the picture plane with a thoughtful, perhaps somber expression. Moses Soyer and his artist brothers Raphael and Isaac are best known for their Social Realist paintings of the Depression era; however, Moses would later devote himself to depicting the female figure. He was especially fond of paying homage to ballet dancers. Size of sight view: 17.75" L x 23.375" W (45.1 cm x 59.4 cm) Size of frame: 24.375" L x 30" W (61.9 cm x 76.2 cm)

Born in Borisoglebsk, Russia, Moses Soyer and his family immigrated to the Bronx, New York City in 1912 due to political turmoil in Czarist Russia. He was the twin brother of Raphael Soyer and the older brother of Isaac Soyer; all three brothers were accomplished artists. Living in New York had its advantages for a budding artist. Moses Soyer studied art at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, the Educational Alliance, and the Ferrer Art School - all between 1916 and 1920. His teachers included Ashcan artists Robert Henri and George Bellows. Moses had his first solo exhibition in 1926, and in addition to having a successful career as an artist, would later teach at the Contemporary Art School and The New School. In addition, Moses and his brothers Raphael (his twin) and Isaac were Social Realist artists during the Great Depression, and many of their works highlighted the struggles of the working class during this period. Furthermore, the twins created a mural together under the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project at the Kingsessing Station post office in Philadelphia.

Moses Soyer's works have been collected by esteemed museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), The Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Brooklyn Museum (NYC), the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington DC), the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art (NYC), the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN), the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Fort Worth), the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington DC), the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Yale University Art Gallery.

  • Condition: This artwork has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in very nice condition. It is hand signed in red on the lower right and hand signed in black above the foot. There is a slight stain to the right proper of figure's face that may simply be a drop of ink or paint that occurred when Soyer was working on the piece. The frame is also quite nice save a few scuffs/abrasions to the finish. Wired for suspension and ready to display.
