Colebrook (British, active early 20th century), Fox Hunt, oil on canvas, ca. early 20th century. Signed "Colebrook" on lower left. Delineated with expressive brushstrokes, an abstract yet still representational painting of a British foxhunt, a sport that dates back to the 15th century. The composition includes numerous horsemen wearing traditional black bowlers and foxhounds trained to follow the scent, chase, and catch foxes. Foxhunting became very popular among the upper class in the 19th century England; however, today the sport is banned in Scotland, and the British House of Commons outlawed foxhunting in England and Wales. A skillfully executed painting of this once immensely popular sport. Set in an attractive wooden frame with green accents to pick up the vibrant greens of the artist's palette. Size: 12.5" W x 6" H (31.8 cm x 15.2 cm); 15.75" W x 9.25" H (40 cm x 23.5 cm) framed.

Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.
