**First Time At Auction**

Carroll Thayer Berry (American, 1886-1978). "The Cove - Maine Coast" woodcut, mid 20th C. Titled and signed below the image. A beautiful woodcut depicting a picturesque cove on the coast of Maine in sage green, black, and white hues. Carroll Thayer Berry's career took him to many American towns where he combined his talent for engraving with a passion for the marine environment. Following World War II, he and his wife moved to Rockport, Maine and Berry created woodcut engravings depicting picturesque scenes in Maine for several decades. Here he has depicted a quaint cove dotted with charming homes and boats docked by the shore. Set in an attractive frame under glass. Size: 12.5" W x 10.75" H (31.8 cm x 27.3 cm); 19" W x 19.375" H (48.3 cm x 49.2 cm) framed

Prior to working as an artist, Berry earned a degree in engineering from the University of Michigan. He returned to his beloved New England in 1909 to work as a mechanical draftsman for an engineering firm in the Boston area, taking art classes at night. The following year he was working for an architectural firm in Portland, Maine and contracted malaria when traveling to Panama. After returning home, he decided to study art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Interestingly, he also returned to Panama to create a series of murals celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.
